Phenoxyethanol is among the gentlest yet most effective preservatives used in personal care. Because Mineral Fusion body and hair care products are water-based, they require preservation. If not preserved, water-based products risk being contaminated by mold, bacteria and yeast. We are legally, and ethically, required to prevent such contamination.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed the safety of phenoxyethanol and approved its use as an indirect food additive as well as in cosmetics. The safety of phenoxyethanol has also been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that phenoxyethanol was safe as a cosmetic and food ingredient. In 2007, as part of the scheduled re-evaluation of ingredients, the CIR Expert Panel considered available new data on phenoxyethanol and reaffirmed the above conclusion.
